Useful Information on Honduras
Capital city: Tegucigalpa
Official language: Spanish
Currency: The official currency of Honduras is the Honduran lempira (HNL) which is subdivided into centavos. 100 centavos equal 1 lempira. The major currency exchange rates (on January 16, 2010) are: 1 USD = 18.92 HNL, 1 EUR = 27.20 HNL, 1 GBP = 30.82 HNL
General: Honduras is a republic in Central America. It was formerly known as Spanish Honduras to differentiate it from British Honduras (now Belize). Once part of Spain's empire, Honduras became an independent nation in 1821. Honduras borders the Caribbean Sea on the north coast and the Pacific Ocean on the south through the Gulf of Fonseca. Telephone country code: 86, Cellular (mobile): 78, Internet: .hn
Major cities: The capital Tegucigalpa, La Ceiba, San Pedro Sula, El Progreso, Choluteca, Comayagua, Danlí
Major international airports:
Tegucigalpa, Toncontín International Airport (TGU)
Roatán, Juan Manuel Gálvez International Airport (RTB)
La Ceiba, Golosón International Airport (LCE)
San Pedro Sula, La Mesa International Airport (SAP)
Taxis: Taxis operate in all the main Honduras towns. Meters are non-existent and taxi prices can vary widely so it's best to know your fare before getting into the cab. Fares are negotiable and bargaining hard can get you a reasonable deal. For safety reasons, it makes sense to use taxis to get around in the big cities at night. For trips further afield it can be worth hiring a taxi for a few hours, or even for the whole day. There are also water taxis, which the only means of transportation between Roatan and the other Bay Islands.
Money: Credit cards are widely accepted. ATMs are available in the major towns but often do not accept UK credit cards. Sterling cannot be changed in Honduras. Travellers’ cheques in US Dollars (such as American Express) are accepted in Roatan.

Honduras has little in the way of gaming laws. The country has had a tumultuous history and is still reeling from the effects of internal political strife, poor infrastructure and widespread corruption. Even the most basic laws against murder and theft are only sporadically enforced. It would be safe to say that online gambling sits low on the to-do list of government officials.

Honduras Gaming

If Honduras does indeed have gambling laws somewhere, they are not published on the internet. This is of little concern, however, as law enforcement has more pressing issues to consider. If you have a bank account and connection to the internet, you can safely place real money bets online. The key is choosing the right Honduran gambling site for your needs.

Best Honduran Betting Sites

The best betting sites for Hondurans are licensed in countries with strict gaming regulations. These are the safest places to play because they answer to the rule of law and are audited by government authorities to ensure fair games and proper management of players’ funds.

Rating

Honduras does not license local gambling companies so your safest option is to place your wagers with foreign websites. The above sites all offer their services in Spanish and are happy to accept business from the country. Even though they may be located in distant lands, they are perfectly safe due to their licensing standards.

Honduras Casinos

I have personally worked with these sites for years and have had nothing but good experiences with each of them. You have to remember that many of these are practically institutions in their home countries employing thousands of people and serving millions of wagers every single day. Some are publicly traded companies listed on the London Stock Exchange.

Depositing with the Honduran Lempira

Making the first deposit is the most challenging part in getting started with online gambling in Honduras. No major betting websites are equipped to process transactions in lempiras. You will need to first convert your money into USD or use an e-wallet to help with the conversion process. Here are some of the most popular methods to deposit:

Casinos

My personal recommendation is to go with either Skrill or Neteller. They both work in Honduras and can help you exchange your funds for the appropriate currency. They also have prepaid debit cards that you can use to pay for things without sending a lot of cash to the bank.

I have talked to some players from Honduras who are worried about corruption and making themselves potential targets for criminal activity simply by moving too much money through the banking system. A prepaid debit card linked directly to your Neteller or Skrill account allows you to spend the money inside your e-wallet account without ever withdrawing it to your bank account.

It’s also not a bad idea because the legal status of online betting is uncertain in Honduras. Nobody can definitively say whether it is legal or illegal. In that case, you might as well exercise the additional caution and get an account with an e-wallet to boost your privacy.

Gambling Laws in Honduras

The constitution and other laws are unclear on the subject of online gambling. You could even call a local gaming attorney in Honduras (yes, there are a few) and they’ll tell you the same thing. There’s no precedent either way.

What I can tell you is there is no legal method for obtaining licenses to operate online gaming sites in Honduras. This would be a bad idea anyways considering Panama has a fully legal licensing process just a short plane trip away.

Honduras Gambling Age

Participating in online gambling as a patron is also unclear but generally seems to be safe. People in Honduras do gamble and play poker online. The exact legality is unclear but authorities have other more pressing concerns at the moment. Home to the highest murder rate in the world, Honduran police already have a full plate. What types of games you play from the privacy of home just isn’t a high priority item at the moment.

Several land-based casinos operate throughout Honduras. The largest of these include:

  • The Honduras Maya Hotel and Casino Royale in Tegucigalpa
  • Hotel Copantl in San Pedro Sula
  • Barcelo Palma Real Beach and Casino Resort in La Ceiba
  • The Excelsior Hotel and Casino in Tegucigalpa
  • And a few other smaller operations frequented by locals

It is recommended that travelers stick with the large casinos attached to tourist-friendly hotels. Smaller gaming establishments that cater to locals are of completely unknown quality. It’s hard telling who runs these places, what the payout rates are and if the games are even fair. That is in addition to the likelihood of encountering the country’s extensive criminal element at such venues.
